The word Carousel stems from an Arabian game called Carosellos which was played on horseback. This and other horsemanship games arrived at the French court in the seventeenth century and became known as Carousel. In one such jousting game, the object was for the Knight to pierce a gold ring with his sword. As a practicing device, the French swordsmen sat on a wooden horse which rotated around a pole, thus giving rise to the Merry_Go_Round concept. The year 1860 marked the begining of the American tradition of handcrafted carousels. Many were made by immigrant craftmen from Europe.
Ann Dezendorf with her 23 years of experience pays homage to the artistry and imagination of the great International carvers of the golden era of Carousels.
